Wow. Totally right. But he's a poet, not an author (we have to distinguish between these for exactitude's sake. Literary people are odd about language and definitions. Fools.) We'll totally do another list of awesome excess hair and include poets and pundits and it will be broader than sci-fi writers. Fo sho! Thanks for the pic.

But what of the magnificent, unclassifiable hair-ruff sported by poet and critic William Empson?

"The beard bearer," I love that! It has such an association with Old English: Grim sword work, fierce spear-Danes, and now...The Bear Bearer. One of the things that attracted me to Eastern Orthodoxy (no religious talk here, I promise) was the epic Tolstoys. My usual sarcasm aside, I never thought of beards as being imbued with an aura of mysticism, but on reflection, you're absolutely correct.

As a fully fledged beard connoisseur (read: hot for beards), I have to agree that beards hold both a mystical and simultaneously primal appeal. The beard bearer is a figure of wisdom, of manliness unbound (think lumberjacks and fishermen) and also of not-gay sensitivity (every folk singer, ever). Only one thing remains to be said: gentlemen, start your face engines.

As a bearded man boldly confronting the world with my manly, furry visage, I found your analyses of our collective, bearded greatness quite accurate and empowering. However beards are only part of our success. As those great men you referenced in your post would attest to (I was inexplicably missing from your list), our virility is enhanced by our preponderance of ear and back hair as well. Women find that feral quality - along with the natural grace, sophistication, and intelligence that a beard represents - to be irresistible. I attribute this lust to the sebaceous glands from which all my luxurious follicles arise. Those glands are irresistible, baby.

I think that the photographer, Richard Avedon, did the most incredible job of capturing Pound's fragility - as he has done with other famous people like Marilyn Monroe (http://www.artnet.com/artwork/32402/396/marilyn-monroe-new-york-city-may-6-1957.html).

The images of Pound seem so tragic. I would not imagine someone as preoccupied with culture and governance as Pound to look any different at the end of his life, given that he lived to see two world wars and was unable to complete his greatest work before he died. Also he looks a bit like Johnny Depp. When he was young, that is.
